Cadets normally begin their Naval Science 1 year as a cAdet/ Seaman Recruit. There are three advancement cycles during each school year. They are oppurtunities for each cadet to advance to the next higher rank. The advancement cycles are normally scheduled during the 9th wee, 18th week, and the 27th week of the school year. The following list shows the minimim requirements for advancement and promotion to each rate or rank.
Bear in mind that in addition to the minimum requirements as set below, all advancements require Senior Naval Science Instructor approval.
NOTE: Regardless of rank, attendance and academic performance are key to advancement and a true indicator of a cadet's commitment and dedication to NJROTC and school. A cadet will not be considered for advancement if he or she accrues 7 or more absences, excused or unexcused, in the previous 18 week leading up to the advancement cycle. Exceptions will be considered for previously arranged prolonged absences or hospitalization but only on a case-by case basis. In addition to minimum GPA's listed; no cadet will be advanced at any rank if he or she is failing and currently receiving an "F" in any other class. The Senior Naval Science Instructor may promote any cadet who exhibits the skills, character, positive attitude,
and leadership ability commensurate with a higher rate/rank at any time.
Cadets are only demoted in rate/rank if they fail to maintain the minimum acceptable standards for their rate/rank.
Normally, a cadet is given the opportunity to correct any problem before such action is taken unless the problem is
serious enough to bring discredit upon the NJROTC Unit, or if the cadet presents a poor attitude. For Cadet/CPO or
above,a grade of "F" in any class will result in probation for the next grading period. They may keep their current
position of leadership and their rate, but must bring their grade up to passing in the next grading period.
LEADERSHIP BY EXAMPLE IS REQUIRED! A cadet can only be demoted by the SNSI.
Some cadets lead very busy lives outside of NJROTC class and may not wish to participate in most sctivities. Cadets'
grades for Naval Science are earned strictly in the classroom and class-related activities -- not for extra or
co-curricular activities. Some cadets may do very well in the classroom and earn good grade but are not advanced because
they chose not to participate in the many events planned after school and on the weekends. Conversely, some cadets may
participate in everything possible in NJROTC but not do as well in the classroom. Our Promotion Pat is set up to encourage
all cadets to study, work hard, have fun, contribute to the community and stay fit.
